Dealing with bilingual children
Having a child who speaks more than one language is always a positive thing, but still some parents make mistakes when it comes to raising their kid.
There are some things you need to know, just to make sure you are not doing anything wrong.
First and foremost, don’t ever criticize your kid in case he/she don’t pronounce a word correctly. Kids who live with parents who speak different languages, sometimes tend to mix the words, because it is not so easy to speak more than one language when you are young.
It is completely normal for you to tell them if they are doing something wrong and to give them an advise, but don’t ever criticize them.
Some parents like to show off when it comes to their child’s “talent”, because you cannot often find a kid who speaks two languages or more.
This is wrong, because your child is not a toy or a performer, so do not force him/her to do anything in front of anyone, because a lot of kids at that age tend to be very shy and not so open about it.
Kids learning languages can be very touchy and sensitive about their skills, because they think they will make some mistakes. Give them some time.
It is also very important for you to know that you shouldn’t have high expectations when it comes to their fluency or pronouncing some words.
They need time to adjust and accept more than one language, so don’t force them to know more or speak better.
In time they will overcome every obstacle concerning languages, you just need to be patient, and you’ll see that it will all turn out fine.
