The American Government treats education seriously because of the pivotal role that it plays in the country’s social and Economic progress. Consequently the Department of education has put in place measures aimed at transforming teaching in the US by involving teachers in leadership. Some of these measures include
1. Teach to lead initiative
This project aims to encourage teachers to stay in the teaching profession. It also creates opportunities for teachers to participate in leadership in addition to their classroom work. This initiative also encourages various states in the US to install systems which support teacher’s participation in leadership.
2. Commit to lead
Another initiative that aims to transform teaching in America is the commit to lead project. This is an online project that allows teachers all over the US to exchange ideas about leadership
3. Teachers newsletter
This is a weekly publication that is fully written by teachers. It recognizes the contribution of teachers who have excelled in their work. It also celebrates teaching as a profession and endeavors to portray it positively.
4. Respect initiative
Like the name suggests this project aims to earn respect for the teaching profession by improving the quality of teaching and enhancing teacher participation in leadership.
5. Teaching and principal ambassador fellowship
This initiative involves teachers and school principals in the development and implementation of the national education policy. Teachers and principal fellows in this program take leave of one year and come to Washington DC to work in the US Government offices. Alternatively they continue teaching and work part time for the department of education.
These measures will go a long way in transforming education in US and ensure that teachers are involved in the formulation of education policies in the country
